Five tips to get your closet ready for spring

The days are getting longer, the sun is feeling warmer - and the season so many of us have been anxiously awaiting will be here soon: spring!

The new season will be arriving in our boutiques even sooner: Monday 3/15 at Old Orchard and at our 900 N. Michigan Shops location, Tuesday 3/16 in Glencoe, and we need your spring consignments nowIt's the perfect time to check your closet for items you know you won't be wearing, streamline what you have, and make room for new spring purchases.

GET READY

Set aside an afternoon, put on your favorite tunes, follow our five simple steps, and before you know it, your closet will be streamlined, it will be much easier to find your favorite pieces, you can get dressed faster, and most importantly, you'll feel great about what you're wearing.

Even better? You'll be ready to make an appointment with us to sell the designer fashion you won't be wearing. We pay competitive rates and will get your spring pieces sold fast, and we'll pay you fast. (Most checks above $50 are cut within 30 days of the sale of your item.)

GET STARTED

Here are five simple tips to get your closet spring-ready:

1) TAKE EVERYTHING OUT

This first step isn't easy, but it's worth it! (Probably a good time for a quick dust and vacuum, too!) Clear your closet completely out, then get ready for the next step: separating by category.

2) GROUP ITEMS BY CATEGORY

Create piles of items by categories - blazers, tops, pants, jeans, accessories, shoes, etc.

3) DECISION TIME: KEEP, DONATE OR CONSIGN

Next, go through each pile and begin to separate into piles:  KEEP, DONATE or CONSIGN. Pick up and look at each item and ask yourself:

A) Does it fit?

B) Have I worn it within the last year (or more)?

C) Do I love it and feel good wearing it? (Or as Marie Kondo famously asks, "does this item spark joy?")

If the answer is "yes", add to your keep pile. (If you're not sure, read on below about adding an "outbox" in your closet.)

All the "no" items go into your donate or consign piles:

Consign your gently worn, high quality, spring season designer pieces that are in good to excellent resale condition (freshly cleaned, on hangers and free of stains, holes, pulls, pilling or other visible signs of wear.) Of course, should you prefer to donate items to us rather than consign them, we always welcome that - and will give you a tax form to fill in along with our deep gratitude!

Donate those items that are not in resale condition. One of our charitable partners, WINGS program, welcomes your donations should you have items that aren't on our list of accepted designers or don't meet our resale condition requirements

If you have clothing that is no longer wearable, recycle it! Options are available in our area.

4) PUT YOUR ITEMS BACK WITH HANGERS FACING IN

As you put your items back in the closet, point the hangers facing inward. During the course of the next season, you'll be able to observe what you wear and don't wear by the items that stay turned inward. It will make those keep, consign or donate decisions easier the next time!

5) KEEP YOUR CLOSET STREAMLINED WITH THE ONE IN, ONE OUT RULE,

When you bring a new purchase in, consider removing one item from your closet so you stay on top of your closet inventory. If you're not sure whether you're ready to part with something, add an "outbox" to your closet: a basket that holds items you're not sure you're ready to part with yet. After a period of time goes by, revisit your outbox and see if you've come to a decision. That way, you aren't making hasty decisions you'll regret.

Did you make it through the steps? Congratulations! We hope you enjoy your newly streamlined closet. Now, consign your unwanted spring fashion with us today, and earn cash fast for your new spring purchases!
