Successful Charitable Resale Shop Makes Powerful Impact in Glencoe, Beyond
November 18, 2013 – GLENCOE, IL -- The board of the North Shore Exchange, a charitable, upscale resale shop, announces the grant recipients of the remaining $50,000 out of the $75,000 in proceeds it earned in its first four months of operation.
"There are countless worthy causes and organizations out there and we are thrilled to announce that we will be helping these seven groups with their critical, mission-driven work," says Wendy Serrino, president of the board of the North Shore Exchange. “A lot of thought and consideration went into honoring groups whose causes best align with our philanthropic mission of improving the lives of children and families with the greatest need.”
The following recipients in the categories of homelessness, elderly, disabilities and hunger will be presented with checks this evening at a reception honoring their important missions.
HOMELESSNESS
La Casa Norte: This Chicago organization serves youth and family confronting homelessness.
The Night Ministry: This Response-Ability Pregnant and Parenting Program (RAPP Program) is the only provider of shelter beds dedicated to homeless, minor-aged pregnant and parenting youth in Chicago. Its goal is to increase safety, stability, and physical and emotional health and wellness of pregnant and parenting homeless youth and their children.
Family Promise: This organization provides emergency shelter, food and supportive services to families in homeless situations, while keeping the family unit intact.
DISABILITIES
Northern Suburban Special Recreation Association (NSSRA): This organization enriches the lives of people with disabilities in Deerfield, Glencoe, Glenview, Highland Park, Kenilworth, Lake Bluff, Northbrook, Northfield, Wilmette and Winnetka through quality recreational services.
ELDERLY
Home Opportunities Maintenance for the Elderly (H.O.M.E.): This organization helps Chicago’s under-served, low-income seniors maintain their independence by providing services such as home upkeep and safe living conditions. The organization’s free shopping bus enables seniors with limited mobility or who live in food deserts to have access to groceries, pharmacies and medical services that are essential to their wellbeing. H.O.M.E. also owns and manages three affordable housing buildings with individual apartments and shared living for those who need assistance.
HUNGER
Greater Chicago Food Depository: This organization provides food for hungry people while striving to end hunger in our community.
Midwest Food Bank: This organization’s mission is to alleviate hunger and poverty by gathering and distributing food donations to not-for-profits and disaster sites without cost to recipients.
With these distributions the North Shore Exchange has now distributed $75,000 in proceeds from the sales of its successful resale operation that opened in March of this year. Local organization Family Service of Glencoe received $25,000 last July. The shop is the charitable venture of the Woman’s Library Club of Glencoe.
“We are thrilled at the success of the shop and how it has allowed new light to shine on the longstanding philanthropic tradition of the Women’s Library Club of Glencoe,” said Peg Malloy, president of the Woman’s Library Club of Glencoe. “We want to thank our supporters for contributing to the success of the shop and enabling us to make a powerful impact in our community and beyond.”
The shop has been a collaborative effort between the Woman's Library Club of Glencoe along with the board of the North Shore Exchange, board members of Family Service of Glencoe, and many dedicated donors, consignors, supporters and volunteers.
